WHICH CAME FIRST?

I want to ask you a question. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? If you say, the chicken, then you are confronted with the mystery of a bird existing without ancestry and without being hatched. And if you say, the egg, then you are faced with the miracle of reproduction without parentage.

Then you have to explain the existence as a sheer coincidence. You must explain how even the simplest bit of matter and the most basic form of intelligent existence came into being. Design without a designer. Intelligence without a mind.

What are the facts? The facts are that there are millions of stars and trees that exist. Water is wet. Trees produce leaves. I breathe air, but fish die unless in the water. Scientists tell us that everything is energy…neutrons and electrons. But energy cannot write a poem or play a violin. Rocks may be made of atoms but they don’t give gifts on birthdays.

Can you explain life? Do you know why roses are red and violets are blue? So what is your answer to the question: which came first…the chicken or the egg?

Did you just happen? To believe that is to deny all existence. Are you nothing more significant than a June bug that makes a meal for speckled trout? Is the meaning of everything nothing?

There are really only two answers. Either I am made by God…in His image and likeness…as Genesis tells us…or I am a chance mutation with no more significance than a leaf that blows in the wind.

The only answer I have for my existence is that God made me. Psalm 100:3 tells me, “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” If you leave the Bible closed, then all of the philosophers together on earth cannot supply you with an answer.

Why am I here? Who made me? Is there life beyond the grave? Will evil be punished and good rewarded? The Bible gives the answer. Genesis 1 says: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light…And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:1-3, 31).

John chapter 1 says: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made…And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

Again, in Hebrews 1:1-2 we read, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.”

Every effect must have a cause. Every house has a builder. Every painting has a painter. Psalm 100 says we are the sheep of His pasture. You and I are here because God put us here. He created us by His divine power.

We need a Light to guide us. We need an Arm to lean upon. We need a Champion to welcome us home when travelling days are done. That one is Jesus. I invite you to trust HIM today.

“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” Hebrews 11:3
