We Have An Unction Part 3 — 1 John 2:18-29

Passed From Death Unto Life

The Person of the Holy Spirit instructs us, teaches us, and enables us. He guides our lives. We find in the Bible that there are certain works that the Spirit of God does toward the world, and there are certain works that the Spirit of God does toward the believer. There is a difference in the type of work He does, but He is working.

We Remain By This Unction

God says here in 1 John 2:24-25, “Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father…And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.”

We remain in the Lord because of the work of the Holy Spirit. As God reveals the truth to us by His Spirit, we choose the truth and choose to walk in the truth.

John was writing to people who were living in perilous times. There is no doubt that they were hearing things that frightened them. He declared, “If you remain in the Lord, you are going to understand that Jesus Christ is the Victory. He is over all things! We have this eternal life in Him!” God says, “I want you to have the wisdom and understanding to remain steadfast in the Lord in this troubled world.

We are able to remain because we have this unction from the Holy One. We are not able to do this on our own. Apart from the Spirit of God, we are never going to be victorious. God says He gives us this understanding. As we abide in Him we can rejoice that He has conquered all things. They are all under His feet; we are in Him, and He is in us. We have this eternal life.

We Remember By This Unction

Now we are given a summary. In 1 John 2:26-29 we read, “These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you…But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him…And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming…If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.”

There are seducers in the world

Many are being led astray. Nearly every day of my life there are decisions that must be made about the path that we take. We must not be led astray! There is a spirit of seduction in this age. Cults are mostly made up of people who were once in main-line churches. These false religious groups prey on people who have been introduced to the Christian faith but did not grow and learn. We must remember that there are those in this world who have set out to lead people astray. Be on guard!

God has not left us as orphans; He will teach us

We can learn all that we need to know about God and His Word from the Holy Spirit’s teaching. Even as I am teaching you, the Holy Spirit is also teaching you and confirming to you that this is the truth. As we compare Scripture with Scripture, the Lord will teach us His Word.

Parents need to know the Scripture in order to be able to say to their children, “This is the thing God says that you are to do.” We ought to be able to take passage of Scripture and say, “This is what God’s Word teaches.”

We need to understand and remember that the Lord will teach us and show us His Word. When we face a crisis, we do not have to think of ourselves as orphaned, because the Lord Jesus said that He was not going to leave us as orphans. He has given us the Holy Spirit to teach us and show us His way. We remember that we are living is a world of seducing people who are trying to lead people astray. Remember that the Holy Sprit is here to teach us, and He gives us an unction from the Holy One.

Christ our Saviour is coming again

Christ is coming again. This means that our world-view should not be the same world-view of an unbeliever. We understand that Christ is coming again. The effect this should have on our lives is that we do not live our lives like unbelievers in this world. We are going to reign with our Lord. When you remember this truth that Jesus Christ is coming again, how does it affect your life here and now?

The life we live should prove that we have been with the Lord. The Bible says in 1 John 2:29, “If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that everyone that doeth righteousness is born of him.”

People who are outside of Christ wonder, “How can I even be interested in Christian things?” You are forgetting something! When you are born into God’s family and become one of His children, God gives you an unction from the Holy One, and your desires change. God enables you to desire those things that Christ wants you to have.

We have an unction from the Holy One. This unction enables us to recognize what is error and what is truth and to remain where we ought to be in our Christian lives. Seducers are everywhere. Remember that we are just pilgrims passing through this earth. God will teach us that our Lord is coming again.

“To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints” 1 Thessalonians 3:13
